Travel plans with Great Walks

Only one last week of work and afterwards I can finally continue my journey through New Zealand. It will begin on Saturday the 13th.

Weekly report

2024 started for me with a festival. Rock in The Park was a bit boring at the beginning, but after 10 o’clock the atmosphere was heating up. Naturally there was a heavy rainfall before the fireworks, but luckily the view was undisturbed. I tried my best to shoot good pictures and during this process I became aware, that I don’t enjoy the moment itself anymore, because my sole concentration was on the pictures. I saw only a glimpse of every rocket through a small lens. We will see, how this realization is affecting future moments.

At work we focused on eradicate Himalayan Balsam. After 17 bags in Hagley Park, we plunged into the water, to eliminate the same amount. After work I started to plan my near journey, it’s going to be expensive and therefore worked on Saturday too.

Travel plans

During my expedition of the North Island, I never really planned anything. Only at some exceptions like the Tongariro Alpine Crossing or in Wellington for the ferry. Because of the Great Walks I have to know every detail on my adventure through the South. The booking system is in that regard really annoying, you have to know your route and date for all the huts/campsites. As it seems, I will only sleep on campgrounds, because you need to book huts a year beforehand. 2 tracks I wanted to experience are impossible, Milford Track would have been a miracle , but I’m a surprised about the Routeburn Track. I have to finish Kepler Track in 2 days and I cannot say anything about Heaphy Track, Abel Tasman and Queen Charlotte (not a Great Walk, but similar appeal). I want to go on other hikes, besides Great Walks too.

Because of these tricky circumstances I already planned the rest of January. It’s going to be really cool, expensive (around 1100€ at the end of the month) and it could be already the best part of my journey. It’s uncertain if I can keep up my upload schedule. I won’t have a signal Sundays on mountains or solitude islands.

I’m looking forward to it and you can see more fireworks in the gallery.
